Stern Bild City is a thriving metropolis where superheroes called “NEXTs” protect the streets, sponsors pull the strings, and a hugely popular show called Hero TV captures all of it. Veteran hero Kotetsu Kaburagi (AKA Wild Tiger) and hotheaded new hero Barnaby Brooks, Jr. (nicknamed Bunny by his friends) are forced to team up not only to protect Stern Bild City, but to earn as many points on Hero TV as possible. Joined by a diverse cast of heroes, all with different powers and answering to their own corporate sponsors, Tiger and Bunny must find a way to work together, uncover the secret of the “Ouroboros,” and earn enough points to become this year’s “King of Heroes.”

The rambunctious adventure-comedy Tiger & Bunny (2011) takes place in the future, when individuals called "Nexts" use their supernatural abilities to become costumed Heroes, protecting the people of Stern Bild City. Their adventures appear live on Hero TV, and a point system brings one lucky contestant the title of King of Heroes. Kotetsu Kaburagi, a.k.a. "Wild Tiger," has been a Hero for 10 years. He's a bit of a klutz who racks up staggering insurance claims when he inadvertently destroys things. The other Heroes regard Kotetsu with a bemused affection, but ratings-obsessed director Agnes never tires of berating him. To boost ratings, the corporate sponsors pair Kotetsu with handsome, charming, and instantly popular rookie Barnaby Brooks Jr. Not surprisingly, they get on each other's nerves. Barnaby dismisses Kotetsu as over the hill; Kotetsu annoys Barnaby by addressing him as "Bunny." The mismatched pair are finally learning to work as a team when Ourobouros, a mysterious crime syndicate responsible for the murder of Barnaby's parents, attacks Stern Bild City. Tiger & Bunny will appeal to fans of Fullmetal Panic and Generator Gawl. The filmmakers provide plenty of mecha battles and weird villains, but they leaven the action with a generous dollop of slapstick comedy. Barnaby embodies the handsome young hero of adventure anime, but his single-minded quest to avenge his parents gives him more depth. In his outsize cap, outré tie, and two-tone shoes, Kotetsu may remind some otaku of Dee in Fake. But it's a mistake to underestimate him: Kotetsu is fiercely devoted to the ideal that a real Hero rescues anyone in danger, even a criminal. This first set of the broadcast series makes it clear why the engagingly ill-matched Barnaby and Kotetsu went on to star in two theatrical features.
